The Philosophy and Legacy of Plato
presented by Dr. Ron Muller
Dr. Muller will discuss the origins of philosophy in Ancient Greece and how the earliest thinkers, reflecting on the great questions concerning man and the cosmos, advanced understanding through natural reason. Recounting how the Greeks first pondered issues concerning the physical world and the elements of nature, he will outline how philosophy shifted focus in the 5th century b.c. to the consideration of man and society, the nature of the human person, ethics, and politics culminating in the wisdom of Socrates and Plato.
Saturday’s session will examine…
- Socrates’ dialectical method of philosophic inquiry.
- The political climate that led to his trial and execution.
- How Plato carried forward and perfected Socratic insights.
- How Plato’s philosophy is a pillar of Western thought.
- Plato’s theory of the forms.
